breed of dog known for its obedient temperament, its alert, happy expression, and its large litters, sometimes up to 18 pups; coat is short and dense and should always be black with tan markings separating white blazes on chest, head, underbelly, and feet; ears are slightly long and droop to side of head; tail is slim and pointy, medium length, and hangs almost straight down; eyes are orange-brown; adult stands 23-29 in. (58-74 cm) tall at shoulders and weighs about 130 lbs (59 kg); originated by Roman armies, who left it behind in Switzerland, where it was used as draft dog for pulling carts or sleds; its natural protectiveness makes it a good guard dog, especially of children; also called Sennenhund, Schutzhund, Swissy, Old Blaze.
